YOUR CHARACTER SPEAKS LOUDER THAN YOUR WORK…
Ashton began her career as an athletic marketing intern at Indiana University. She took a short detour to work remotely with a small sports agency, always thinking she would be a sport agent but then IU called her back to be Assistant Marketing Director, then Director of Marketing.
Dr. Gary Sailes a professor at IU provided Ashton with a piece of advice that she passes on to others: “It’s not about who you know, it’s about who knows you and who likes you.” People may not remember all the things you have done but they remember the way you make them feel. Character speaks a lot louder than your work. Which is one of the ways Ashton was able to move on from IU to the SEC. It was her energy and enthusiasm for all that she does that spoke the loudest and provided her the connections and recommendation from a former colleague.
The one thing missing when in a conference office is working with students. At the SEC she does not have the daily interaction but still has the opportunity to work with students when they volunteer and work Championships with her. She likes to tell them to “Be where your feet are,” soak up everything you can where you are before you hop onto the next thing.
BEYOND THE EVENTS:
A sports memory that stands out to Ashton is National Girls and Women in Sports Day at IU. The best part was the planning of the whole event and then seeing the impact on the student-athletes, staff, community and the youth. All the way from the pre-game clinic to the poster making to the in game shadowing, it all left a mark on each individual.
Ashton and her boyfriend love to cook and try new restaurants. They have a list that has been created from recommendations by those they have met in Birmingham. They refer to the list whenever they want to go out, checking off as many as they are adding.
When not working, Ashton enjoys relaxing at home and binge watching shows, including Grey’s Anatomy, which she has watched multiple times.
